Track Name: Knives
I am a mess;
your hand on my chest
drawing circles with your nails on new skin.

I will confess
I did not expect
to be accepted, as I am, when I'm like this.

It's a short walk
on a long, long pier
until the water's at our toes.

I will take hold
of every man I fear -
they're the ones you want close.

And I hope you brought your knives;
we'll be cutting through this dead skin all night.

I hope you brought your knives;
bloody fingers clawing at my insides.

I hope you brought your knives;
we'll be cutting through this dead skin all night.
Track Name: Cnut
You can't blame yourself for this.
So surrender the walls, unclench your fists.

With wide open hands, fingers outstretched,
I could meet your demands though I've got no pretence.

I will be the hole in your defence.

You can't kick against the waves.
So dig your feet in or be carried away.

With the folly of youth I'll be all you require;
twist myself into some shape you desire.

I will be an object to admire.

It's happening again.
For a real tide can be turned;
or prove that it can't, Cnut.
Track Name: I'll Never See Glasgow Again
This is my face,
all drawn in echoes and white space.
If I close my eyes, inhale and embrace
I'll never see Glasgow again.

Or the view from my flat:
all snapshots, rear window ethics
and that night I watched a stranger unclip her bra
then realise and shut the blinds.

This is what
I have come to expect.

This is my youth:
all pale skin stretched over bony untruths.
If I close my eyes I can hear the world move;
I'll never hear Glasgow again.

Or the sounds of my home:
the faint boiler drip and the buzz of the phone,
feet on the stairway, a knock at the door
I'll never take for granted again.

This is all
I have come to expect.
Track Name: The Cracks
There is a dream you will have tonight -
a dream of more than light.
When it dissolves as the sun comes up
it will hurt like the last night of your life.

There is a shape you will dream of;
it will bring tears to sore eyes.
When it takes form in your waking mind
it will burn like the last night of your life.

There's no use in that;
all you are is glass.

There is a crack in the shape tonight;
it is leaking all it is.
As it empties you are drawn to it:
it is nothing, and you know that emptiness.

There's no use in that;
all you are is glass.
Track Name: A Quiet Life
I'll sell my things and we'll live quietly,
having enough and enough's fine.
Happy enough between wealth and anxiety,
here together 'til the ending of time.

A quiet life.

I'll sell my things and we'll walk inbetween
roads paved with dirt and others with gold.
Ignoring the fires of the world we left to be
happy enough as the years unfold.

A quiet life.

I'll sell my songs and we'll live by the sea,
owing as much as we ever will make.
Or I'll sell my soul and work endlessly,
longing always for that final embrace.

A quiet life.
Track Name: Lot
To you men
I offer my children's lives.
Do to them what you like
so I remain devout.

Daughters, yes,
I admit that it may hurt -
but you're doing the good lord's work
and will get your reward!

Angels, please
see that I have done my best.
I offered forth the lives worth less
to do the work of God.

Lord, please
won't you spare my wife at least.
My children they won't speak to me,
and she is turned to salt.

Years go by.
We fled to the mountainside
to hide from any who survived
and await out time to die.

Pain recedes;
my young begin to speak to me.
They worry that our family tree
withers in this cave with them.

They form their plan:
they mean to get me drunk on wine;
for each to know me for one night;
to carry on the line.

Now I am old
with sons by my daughters both,
to carry on my uncle's oath,
so I'll get my reward.
Track Name: Beautiful Things (ft. Adam Stafford)
Take hold of my hand,
tell me I'm no man;
I'm a dying swan.

Tear at my wings;
base your beautiful things
on my tragic form.

Cover my eyes,
tell me sweet little lies.
I am a wishing well.

Blind as I am
I'll meet all your demands
as my body swells.

And I have no reason to step naked into the water;
a dead leaf caught in a strong wind, I am.

Take hold of my hand,
tell me I'm no man;
I am bitterness.

Abstract, in a kiss,
I'll question all that there is.
I am meaningless

Take shards of my bone,
build yourself a home -
be an anchor dropped.

I'll be the walls,
let my skin keep you warm
as your body stops.

And I have no reason to step naked into the water;
a dead leaf caught in a strong wind, I am.

...

I opened my eyes into the garden the next day;
fifteen men with swords and clubs and guns did come my way.
Thinking these men know not what they do, know not who they betray,
I open up my hands to them as I am lead away.
Track Name: It Is You, And You Are Having Fun
You said something like you were above this.
I said I could see how that would be.
You said you never smiled or cried your eyes out,
but you smiled as you looked at me.

I could see us living out our lives here,
content somehow in shared misery;
I would only smile when you were crying
and you would only cry when you’re with me.

But something in this dream will surely shatter.
I will feel it like a knife into my lung.
I’ll hear laughter fill the room and look behind me;
it is you, and you are having fun.
